The failure of successive governments to end the ongoing ragging cancer in State universities that has consequently led to innumerable induced suicide deaths is by far a very serious crying national issue concerning the very fabric of human lives.
The issue becomes even more propounded when these loss of lives happen to be the young
intellects of the country who sadly meet a sudden end when they have reached the very brink of stepping out as top future professionals by arming themselves with that diploma or degree.
Indeed, that a dime a dozen who are set to entering specialized areas in medicine that set out the elite caliber from general practitioners to medical specialists, and diverse superfluous fields such as engineering that also produce that specialized genre of engineers, are driven to their graves so prematurely by a breed of evil minded, satanic elements who ironically themselves enter the university seeking to become a part of such an elite breed to serving society is a running unsolved national tragedy.
While the authorities responsible ate directly answerable for not putting an end to State campus ragging and as much for the consequent loss of the lives of would be national assets of the country, the lurking question is as to how the obviously blood shedding Dracula’s of the State university system could pass out of the university to becoming medical men and so on with a clean conscience having been responsible for the suicide induced deaths of their fellow colleagues by the wanton ragging.
The regrettably and alarming ever growing cycle of campus ragging of extreme nature that have caused induced suicides of both female and male students has been mainly of physical and sexual nature. The most recent were of the Sabaragamuwa University .student who had been stripped naked followed by a most recent suicide of a female undergrad.
Most of these victims have jumped to their deaths while some have tragically been crippled for life.
It is pertinent that in 2020 the then minister of higher education, Bandula Gunawardena took serious note of this ongoing blood shedding Dracula crime and set up a high powered commission to address the crime.
But, alas by all indications the ragging cancer continues unabated.
The probe covered over 2,000 victims of ragging of extreme physical, mental and sexual harassment meted out to freshers.
“This should be viewed as a national crime as a considerable number has committed suicides, been maimed or hospitalized,” the then higher education minister had reportedly observed while going on to express shock in condemning university ragging saying, “We should be ashamed as a nation for what has happened to these students.”
But the sadist taggers continue to grow menacingly in such a vicious cycle, most who apparently go out free birds ironically with a diploma in hand.
