Sri Lanka hammered out Afghanistan by 6 wickets with eight balls to spare to storm to the Asia Cup super four with Kusal Mendis stroking an unbeaten 74 off 53 with 10 boundaries in maximising quick Nuwan Thushara’s career best 4 for 18 in a score of 169 for 8 off 20 overs haul with Kamindu Mendis joining the party with a 13-ball 26 hitting 2 sixes to boot in lighting up Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi did too by a scorching 20 ball 60 in digging out his side from ag wobbly 114 for 7 by a last over 5 sixes blasting of Dunith Wellalage.
But Nabi’s great effort would be confined to the heroics of the momentary with Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis rising to be the big showman in the ultimate.
His Player of the Match leverage saw Sri Lanka navigate the early scares of 2 for 4 in posting 45 for the third wicket with Kusal Janith Perera who struck a breezy 28 off 20 with 3 boundaries. Skipper Charith Asalanka 17 off 12 took Sri Lanka closer as Kamindu Mendis heaved 26 off 13 slamming two to the stands in an unfinished fifth-wicket wicket 52-run super four thrust.
